Gov. Zero Gets A Promotion?

Maybe today, we will promote Jay Inslee from Governor Zero to “Governor 50”, based on  the well-respected CATO Institute’s biennial review of the nation’s governors and their fiscal policies.  Not surprisingly, Governor Inslee was ranked dead last, but even worse there was considerable distance between him and #49 on the list, Oregon’s Kate Brown (proving that those of us in the Pacific Northwest have much to learn about picking governors).  CATO assigned scores to each governor for how they have managed their fiscal responsibilities.  New Hampshire’s Governor Chris Sununu received a 75 score and Iowa’s Kim Reynolds earned a 71.  The grades slowly cascaded down to the three governors who received the think tank’s lowest rankings:  Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker obtaining a 30 score, Brown a 29, and our own Jay Inslee nearly fell off the charts with a 19 score.  In explaining Inslee’s incredibly poor ranking, a CATO spokesperson said, “On taxes and spending, Jay Inslee has been the worst governor in the United States for many years. It’s really unfortunate for Washington’s economy and for its citizens.” (CATO Institute’s Fiscal Policy Report Card)

After eight years, Inslee still doesn’t have a grasp of what it takes to be a leader in Washington State, and certainly provided no vision for how a third term would be better. House Republican Leader J.T. Wilcox (R – Yelm) posted on Facebook a thoughtful review of last night’s debate.  Wilcox praised the media members who asked questions of the candidates and also provided his assessment of the candidates’ debate performances.  On Inslee’s presentation, Wilcox said, “Many also got to see the Governor Inslee who gets frustrated and resorts to cheap tricks. Trying to win a debate by repeating Trump, Trump, Trump, calling 40% of the voters a belittling name and deliberately conflating national and state issues to demonize groups rather than addressing individuals and issues.” Yep, that pretty much describes Inslee. Source: ShiftWA.org A new report from the Washington Policy Center exposes a significant contradiction from a major promotor (and likely benefactor) of the Democrats’ Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) proposal.    Tim Zenk, a high-priced Washington State lobbyist for the Norwegian company Naste (which will financially benefit from the higher energy costs Jay Inslee wants to impose on Washington residents) testified at a state House hearing that California has lower gas prices now than when it passed its LCFS in 2011 (the truth is prices are higher).  Despite facts not being on Zenk’s side in WA, it also appears clear that his employer knows the truth about a cost-raising LCFS. After all, Naste representatives told California regulators not to impose a cap on how high an LCFS could increase fuel costs, and allow gas prices to continue to climb (and make it profitable for them to develop more expensive energy sources). Source: ShiftWA.org Rumor has it that Governor Inslee is expected to release his next budget proposal on Thursday, December 17 th  (he is constitutionally required to submit this by December 20 th ).  In the coming days, we will provide some good ideas which we do not expect to be included the governor’s proposed July 2021 – June 2023 budget, and some bad ideas which we unfortunately do expect to be in that proposal.  We’ll start our budget effort off with an easy one: We do not expect the governor to financially assist parents who have taken over the responsibility and financial burden of educating their children.  Washington State school districts receive approximately $16,000 per student from federal, state, and local revenue sources, with currently none of that money going directly to families which are now hosting the school in their homes.
